Everyone forgets things sometimes, and memory can change as we get older. But some changes can be early signs of dementia, and it is worth getting them checked.

Common early signs

The NHS lists these as common early symptoms of dementia:

  • Memory loss, such as forgetting recent events or repeating questions
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Finding it hard to carry out familiar daily tasks, such as getting confused over change when shopping
  • Struggling to follow a conversation or find the right word
  • Being confused about time and place
  • Mood changes

These symptoms are often mild at first and get worse over time.

Why see a GP

Memory problems are not always caused by dementia. Depression, infections, vitamin deficiencies, thyroid problems and the side effects of some medicines can all cause similar symptoms, and many of these can be treated. Our guide to sudden confusion in older people explains more.

If it is dementia, an early diagnosis means the person can get the right treatment and support, and can plan ahead while they are able to, for example by making a lasting power of attorney.

What happens at the GP

The GP will usually ask about symptoms, do a physical check and some blood tests, and may do a short memory test. If needed, they can refer the person to a memory clinic or another specialist service for a fuller assessment.

It can help to go with the person and to write down what you have noticed, with examples and dates.

If dementia is diagnosed

There is support available from the NHS, the council and charities. Our guides on the two most common types of dementia and talking with someone who has dementia may help.
