Caring for someone with dementia can be rewarding, but it is also tiring and sometimes overwhelming. Looking after yourself is not selfish. It helps you keep caring.
It is normal to struggle
Many carers feel guilt, frustration, sadness or anger at times. You may not always feel patient. If you find yourself close to shouting, step away, take a breath and ask someone to take over for a while.
Ask for a carer’s assessment
If you care for someone, you can ask the council for a free carer’s assessment. It looks at how caring affects you and what support could help, such as time off, help in the home or advice.
Take regular breaks
- Friends and family. Ask others to take a turn, even for a few hours.
- Day services. Some areas have day centres for people with dementia.
- Respite stays. A short stay in a care home can give you a proper break. Read what is respite care?
Look after your own health
Keep your own GP and dental appointments. Try to sleep, eat well and get outside. Tell your GP you are a carer, as they may be able to offer support.
Get information and support
Charities such as Alzheimer’s Society, Dementia UK and Carers UK offer advice lines, information and local support groups. Talking to other carers who understand can help.
Plan ahead
Talk early about the future, including lasting power of attorney and what the person would want if they needed more care.
When caring at home is no longer possible
There may come a point when the person needs more care than you can give at home, especially at night. Moving into a care home does not mean you stop caring.
