Who it is for

Residential care is for people who can no longer manage safely at home, even with help, and who need support with everyday things like washing, dressing, meals and medicines. At Cedar House we care for people over 65, including people living with dementia or confusion.

Some of our rooms are for residents whose care is paid for by their local council. Please call us on 01375 768505 to ask about rooms and fees.

Your room

Every single room at Cedar House has its own en-suite. There is also one double room. The bedrooms on the ground floor open onto the middle garden or the back garden.

You can make the room your own. Residents and relatives are welcome to decorate and furnish it to their own taste, with photos, pictures and things from home.

  • Every room has a point for a television
  • You can have your own phone in your room, which you pay for
  • There is also a pay phone in the home

Shared spaces

The front of Cedar House is two storeys. Behind it, single-storey bedrooms, a conservatory and a glass-fronted dining room surround a large garden with a wooden pagoda at its centre.

  • Two lounges for residents
  • A conservatory and a glass-fronted dining room
  • Secure gardens with flower and vegetable beds
  • Wide, bright corridors so residents can move about freely

The home is a non-smoking building.

Care and health

Our carers hold NVQ level 2 and 3 in Health and Social Care, complete induction training before they start and attend mandatory training every year. They work closely with local GPs and other health and social care professionals.

  • Staff work through the night as well as the day
  • You can keep your own GP if they agree, or choose from local GPs
  • If a resident has a doctor’s or hospital appointment, we offer the family the chance to go with them first. If they cannot, a member of staff will
  • We do not provide transport ourselves, but we arrange a car or an ambulance through the GP
  • An optician visits once a year and a chiropodist every two months
  • Dental care is available whenever it is needed
  • Residents are assessed by trained continence advisors, and we provide pads and other aids

Daily life

An activities person runs sessions four afternoons a week. We also put on social evenings, outings and holidays for residents who are able to go. A hairdresser visits every fortnight, or more often when needed.

Friends and family can visit at any time. There are no set visiting hours. Pets are welcome to visit too, as long as the residents are happy with it.

Fees

Our fees are fully inclusive, so there is no extra charge for laundry. The only extras are personal items such as newspapers, hairdressing, toiletries, social outings and holidays. Please ask the manager about charges for the chiropodist.

Residents can get to their pocket money during office hours. Outside office hours, the staff can contact a safe key holder.

Inspection

Cedar House is inspected by the Care Quality Commission (CQC) and by the local authorities, Thurrock Council and Essex County Council. The CQC rated Cedar House Good overall and Good in all five areas: safe, effective, caring, responsive and well-led. You can read the CQC report on the CQC website.

How it works

What happens between your first phone call and moving-in day.
