Which care is right?
Residential care, dementia care, a short respite stay or care at home. A quick way to see which might suit the person you are thinking about.
Residential care
Long-term care for people over 65 in a home built for it.
It may suit someone who:
- Needs help with washing, dressing or meals several times a day
- Is no longer safe at home, even with visits from carers
- Is lonely at home and would like company
Dementia care
Care for people over 65 living with dementia or confusion.
It may suit someone who:
- Is over 65 and living with dementia or confusion
- Gets lost or anxious at home, or wanders at night
- Needs staff who understand dementia, day and night
Respite stays
A short stay, so a family carer can rest or recover.
It may suit someone who:
- Has a family carer who needs a rest or a holiday
- Needs somewhere safe while a carer is unwell
- Wants to try a care home before deciding
Home care
Care at home from Cedar House - The Annex.
It may suit someone who:
- Wants to stay in their own home
- Needs help at set times, such as mornings and evenings
- Is safe on their own between visits
Start with an assessment
If you are not sure what help is needed, ask the local council for a free care needs assessment. Anyone who seems to need care and support can ask for one, whatever their money. Ask the council for the area where the person lives. Cedar House itself is in Thurrock.
The assessment looks at what the person can and cannot do, what matters to them and what support would help. Read our guide to the care needs assessment.
Questions to ask yourselves
- What does the person need help with, and at what times of day and night?
- Are they safe at home on their own, including at night?
- How is the main carer coping? Do they need a break?
- What would the person want, if they were able to tell you?
- Is their condition likely to change over the coming months?
