Moving into a care home is a big change. It is normal for the first few weeks to have ups and downs, for the new resident and for the family.

What to expect

Some people settle quickly. Others take weeks or longer. They may feel unsure, tired, sad or unsettled at first. People living with dementia may be more confused for a while after any move.

Share what you know

The staff will want to learn about the person as quickly as possible. It helps to tell them:

  • Their life story: where they grew up, their work, family and interests
  • Their daily routine and what time they like to get up and go to bed
  • Food likes and dislikes
  • What calms them when they are upset
  • The names of people and pets who matter to them

The guide for carers written by Christian Care Homes notes that visitors can help staff learn about a person’s likes and dislikes and the cause of any worries.

Visiting in the first weeks

Some families worry that visiting too much will stop the person settling. There is no single right answer. Talk to the staff about what seems to help. At Cedar House, visitors are welcome at any time.

Look after yourself

Many families feel guilt or relief, or both, after a move. Both are normal. It can take time to adjust to a new role.

Raise concerns early

If something is worrying you, talk to the senior carer or manager. Small things are often easy to sort out.

Getting involved

Join in activities when you visit, have a cup of tea in the lounge or sit in the garden together. Read visiting someone in a care home for more ideas.
